1.e4 e5 2.Nc3
The Vienna Game is a flexible and underrated opening where White develops the knight to c3 rather than the usual f3. It avoids the beaten paths of the Ruy Lopez and Italian while preserving all the same strategic themes. It can transpose into a King's Gambit (3.f4), the Vienna Gambit, or an Italian-like position (3.Bc4).
The Vienna has been revived as a surprise weapon at all levels. White keeps maximum flexibility — the knight on c3 supports a later d4 or f4. The Frankenstein-Dracula Variation (2...Nf6 3.Bc4 Nxe4) is the most dramatic sub-line.
