Petrov's Defense (C42)

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6

About this Opening

Petrov's Defense (the Russian Game) is one of the most solid responses to 1.e4. By counter-attacking White's e4-pawn immediately with 2...Nf6, Black avoids the pressure of the Ruy Lopez or Italian. It's been a reliable drawing weapon for top grandmasters including Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik.

After 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nf3 Nxe4, the positions are often symmetrical and strategically rich. White must play precisely because after 3...Nxe4?, Black can turn the tables. The Petrov often leads to long, technical endgames — perfect for players who want to grind out wins.

➕ Pros

  • Very solid — one of the best equalizers for Black
  • Avoids White's main attacking systems
  • Good for long, technical games

➖ Cons

  • Often leads to drawish positions
  • Passive reputation — less counterplay than the Sicilian
  • White can try the dangerous 3.d4 line
