King's Gambit (C30)

1.e4 e5 2.f4

About this Opening

The King's Gambit is the defining opening of the Romantic Era — aggressive, bold, and full of sacrificial ideas. White offers a pawn on move 2 to open the f-file for the rook and gain rapid development. It produced the most brilliant attacking games of the 19th century and remains a dangerous weapon today.

If Black accepts with 2...exf4, White plays 3.Nf3 and aims for an overwhelming central pawn mass with d4. The King's Gambit Declined (2...Bc5 or 2...d5) avoids the complications but gives White a solid position. The Falkbeer Counter-Gambit (2...d5) is Black's most aggressive response.

➕ Pros

  • Extremely aggressive — ideal for attacking players
  • Rich tactical complications from move 2
  • Surprise value against unprepared opponents
  • Historically one of the most studied openings

➖ Cons

  • White's king is slightly exposed after f4
  • Modern computer analysis has found precise drawing lines
  • Requires confidence playing with early structural weaknesses
