Openings Guide / Semi-Open Games (1.e4, not 1...e5)
1.e4 e6
The French Defense is one of the most reliable responses to 1.e4. Black builds a solid pawn structure with ...e6 and ...d5, challenging White's center. It has been a cornerstone of the repertoires of World Champions Tigran Petrosian, Viktor Korchnoi, and Mikhail Botvinnik.
The French creates a characteristic pawn tension where White controls more central space but Black has a very solid structure. The main systems are the Advance Variation (3.e5), the Classical (3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Bg5), the Winawer (3.Nc3 Bb4), and the Tarrasch (3.Nd2). Black always seeks the ...c5 counter-break.
